Model International Organization |

The Who MIO is a student run organization dedicated to promoting international awareness through presenting lectures, attending simulated international conferences, and hosting cultural events. We specialize in the furthering of knowledge about international relations, comparative politics, foreign affairs, diplomacy, global disputes, political economy, and international organizations.
The What In addition to attending bimonthly meetings, periodic culturally focused social events and lectures, we travel to compete in conferences. Each fall we participate in the Model Organization of American States in San Antonio, TX. There we have represented countries such as Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Nicaragua, Guatemala and Belize. We also host a United Nations for high school students called the North Texas Invitational Model United Nations where over 500 students come representing over 60 nations. In the spring we attend the National Model Arab League in Washington, D.C. where we have represented Djibouti, Oman and Saudi Arabia. We have also participated in the Midwest Model United Nations in St. Louis, MO representing Iraq and in other regional Model UNs and Arab Leagues. We also host lectures that have brought in speakers such as former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell, Reza Phahlawi (the son of the former Shah of Iran), Foreign Service Officer George Resonover Jr., Col. Kenneth Allard (NBC military analyst), former US Consul General to Jerusalem Edward G. Abington and more. MIO was also part of bringing in former U.S. Secretary of State Madeline Albright to UNT during Fall 2004. Other noted events include professor led panel discussions on pertinent international topics.
The When/Where Our meetings are held alternating Wednesdays at 4:00pm in The Student Union building. Meeting dates for Fall 2007 will begin in September. The location will be posted at a later date. To get on the MIO e-mail list, please send an e-mail addressed to the member relations officer for request of information to: mio_unt@yahoo.com
The Why We serve all facets of international studies through our different events throughout the year. MIO attracts both members who are international studies and political science majors and members with an interest in international studies in majors such as foreign languages, journalism, history, economics, business, music, economics, communications, social sciences and more. Our members practice and participate in events that give them skills such as negotiating, knowledge of current events, practice of theory, paper writing advice through research groups, research skills, public speaking and knowledge through lectures.
The How We invite you to attend one of our meetings to meet the people and find out what we are all about. At the meetings you may become more active by participating in our "event" or "member relation" committees. The member relation committee plans community service activities, social events and recruiting events. The events committee plans lectures, panel discussions and other intellectual activities. You may also sign up for conference participation, where we will teach you everything you will need to know. We also encourage you to directly contact us at mio_unt@yahoo.com or visit our website (Click Here) so we can respond to you quickly. Identify yourself as an interested member requesting information.
