Major / Minor Information
Introduction:
This major is designed to prepare students for jobs in the public and private sectors, where globalization is increasing dramatically, or to enter a graduate degree program. These opportunities are concentrated in, but not limited to, six areas of international studies that draw from a variety of social science disciplines.
Bachelor of Arts with a Major in International Studies Degree Requirements:
In addition to the University and College of Arts and Sciences core program requirements, INST majors need 36 hours from the list of approved courses (see course catalog description or view the Areas of Concentration for more information), including twenty-one hours in one of the six areas (designated as the "primary area") and fifteen hours in one of the remaining five areas ("secondary area").
Some courses (e.g., PSCI 4820, Contemporary International Problems) may be repeated for credit as topics vary and if the subject is appropriate. Twelve of the twenty-one hours of the primary area must be in advanced courses. In addition, the student should take six advanced hours (3000 or 4000 level) in a foreign language beyond the fourteen credit hours required by the College of Arts & Sciences.
There are six areas of concentration from which students may choose to satisfy the requirements for the degree: International Politics & Diplomacy, International Business & Economics, International Development, Regional Studies, Security Studies, and Peace Studies.
Students may choose to apply the following courses toward any area of concentration: INST 4800 Internship (subject to departmental approval - see website for details); INST 4900 Special Problems (see course catalogue for 4900 requirements); INST 4850 International Issues/Senior Seminar (topics vary); INST 2980 (sophomore seminar, appropriate for students with less than 60 credit hours who have no more core classes to complete).
International Studies Minor Requirements:
A minor is optional, and may be declared when filing your degree plan with your major program Adviser. A minor in international studies requires 18 hours, including at least 6 advanced hours in upper-division courses (3000 or 4000 level). Nine hours must be in one area of concentration of the International Studies Major, with the 9 remaining hours distributed between one or two other areas of the Major.
Advising:
The purpose of the Adviser's office is to advise, assist, and empower YOU to define and achieve academic and personal goals. The first time you'll make contact with your INST Adviser will be at Freshman or Transfer Student Orientation, and you should see your Adviser at least once per semester. Make an appointment or e-mail the Undergraduate Adviser at any time if you have a question about degree requirements, are ready to discuss an internship program (optional but strongly encouraged), etc. To schedule an advising session, call (940)565-2323. Be sure to print off a copy of your unofficial transcript before seeing an Adviser to create a degree plan or to discuss registration for classes.
Degree Plan. A degree plan, which is essentially a checklist of all major, minor, and core curriculum requirements, should be prepared in consultation with your advisor upon entrance to UNT (subsequent to attendance of a Freshman or Transfer Student Orientation). It is your responsibility to ensure that the plan is prepared. You should meet with your Adviser each semester before registering for classes (make appointment well in advance) to receive an updated copy of your degree audit.
See your College of Arts and Sciences Adviser regarding evaluation of transfer coursework. Only after a College Adviser has determined course equivalency can your INST Major Adviser evaluate transfer courses for the Major.
